Fluorocycle: Recycling mercury lamps

21 January 2015 11:43 AM | Anonymous member
Did you know that 90 per cent of waste mercury-containing lamps end up in landfill each year?

FluoroCycle is a voluntary product stewardship scheme that seeks to increase the national recycling rate of waste mercury-containing lamps.

The focus of FluoroCycle is on the commercial and public lighting sectors, which account for the bulk of all lighting waste. Lamp recycling can help reduce the amount of mercury being sent to landfill. Once mercury is released into landfill it can spread to the wider environment. Mercury is a neurotoxin and is dangerous to humans. The contact details for lamp recyclers and collectors in each state and territory are listed on the FluoroCycle website.

FluoroCycle awards Signatory status to organisations which commit to implement recycling of their waste lamps.  Signatories are listed on the FluoroCycle website and may be included in media releases, case studies, articles and recognition events. There is no fee to apply. Over 240 organisations have already applied for Signatory status with FluoroCycle. Any organisations with an Australian Business Number (ABN) can apply online at the FluoroCycle website.

Australian Government Accreditation

The Hon Greg Hunt MP, Minister for the Environment, officially announced the accreditation of the FluoroCycle scheme at an event held at the Sydney Opera House on 12 September 2014. Please click here for the Media Release.

Accreditation is the Australian Government’s seal of approval for FluoroCycle. Accredited voluntary product stewardship arrangements are authorised to use the Australian Government’s Product Stewardship logo. FluoroCycle’s use of the logo will signal to business and the community that the scheme represents best practice for an Australian product stewardship initiative. For more information on Voluntary Product Stewardship arrangements please visit the Australian Government Department of the Environment website at the following link.

Approved FluoroCycle Signatories have full use of the FluoroCycle logo to be used in conjunction with the Australian Government Product Stewardship logo for their communication material.

Lighting Council Australia, the peak body for Australia’s lighting industry, is the Administrator of the FluoroCycle scheme. For more information contact FluoroCycle on, 03 9859 4545 or via email,
