Some notes from our Melbourne Champions Network meeting on 9 October 2013
Some anecdotes:
- People seem to accept vegetarian food more easily if it isn't labelled "vegetarian"; a lesson reinforced by fast food chain Lord of the Fries - did you know that all it's food is vegetarian? Yes, including the burgers and chicken nuggets.
- We can do more to improve our purchasing habits with tea and coffee, but it is difficult to identify the best solution: FairTrade, Rainforest Alliance, Organic, etc... are all probably better options that current standards.
- Offering staff healthy options is standard, but biscuits are still necessary!
Avoiding Catering Waste
- Routinely ordering fewer portions for meetings than the number of people registered; from a quarter to a third less.
- Sending event reminders or following up on meeting registrations/acceptances often prompts notification of late unavailability
- Encouraging more use of "Tentative" meeting acceptances and prompting for confirmation closer to the date (particularly is using Outlook and for internal meetings)
- OzHarvest and other charities will often accept donations of crockery and cutlery.
