Law firms have a strong role to play in the major transition required to reposition Australias and the worlds future growth, so itYES NO IN DEVTminimises the worst impacts of climate change. The sixth IPCC assessment suggests that to achieve a two-third chance of limiting42%global warming to 1.5, a 90 per cent reduction of greenhouse gas emissions will be required by 2050, but a high emission decrease is needed before 2030. By March 2021, twenty-one per cent of the worlds largest two thousand companies30%had committed to a Net Zero Target, which includes responsibility for the emissions from the production of purchased goods and services in its supply chain.Like most organisation change, climate action starts with gathering information, making commitments, setting targets and planning the actions required. The Greenhouse Gas Protocol provides a comprehensive global standardised28%framework to measure and manage greenhouse gas emissions from value chains and mitigation actions. It categorises direct and indirect emissions into three broad scopes:Scope 1 emissions: Direct GHG emissions which occur from sources owned or controlled by the company, for example, emissions from gas heaters, ovens,CLIMATE ACTION PLAN vehicles and refrigeration. This includes tenancy electricity and gas use, domestic and international flights, taxis, Ubers and other car-based travel and refrigerants. AusLSA members have been effective in reducing this basket of emissions which reduced by eight per cent in the four years leading up to COVID and a total of 72 per cent in the last four years, including the COVID pandemic.26%INITIATIVES Policy on flight offsets 12% ECO-Buy 12% National Greenhouse & Energy Reporting15%(NGERs) compliant reporting Energy audits in previous two years 15% Climate Active - Carbon Neutral 20% Voluntary Carbon Offsets 24% Ride to Work Day 24% Forced computer shutdown 27% Specify energy efficient appliances 41% NABERSs Energy Rating 51% Energy efficient refits undertaken 51% Telecommuting 66% Green Star rated buildings 4-6 star 78% Efficient building and lighting automation 80% Earth Hour 80% Teleconferencing facilities and training 85% End of trip facilities 85%Participation 0% 20% 40% 60% 80% 100%66'
